AĞRI DAĞI (MT. ARARAT) KIŞ TIRMANIŞI 2010

Geçen hafta, Büyük Ağrı Dağı kış tırmanışındaydım. ORDOS ve ODTÜ- DKSK elemanlarından oluşan toplam 22 kişilik bir ekibe dahildim ve hayatımda Ağrı’nın 5165 metrelik zirvesine en kalabalık çıkışı yaptım! Şaka bir yana, ekip çok keyifliydi. Burada tumunun adını sayamayacağım  kadar kalabalık olan  dostlarıma teşekkür ediyorum.

Bu kış tırmanışını klasik güney yüzü rotasından yaptık. 30 ocak 2010 günü ucakla Van’a, oradan da Tendurek gecidi yolu ile Doğubayazıt’a geçen ekibimiz, 31 ocak günü 2100 metredeki Çevirme köyünden hareketle 3200 metredeki 1. kampa ulaştı. Kar derin ve genelde bataktı, hava da soguktu.  1 şubat günü sis ve tipi içinde 4200 metredeki 2. kampa çıktık. Gece  bu yükseklikteki hava ısısı, çadır içinde -10 C kadar, dışarda ise rahatça -20 C kadardı. 2 şubat sabahı saat 9.00 gibi şiddetli rüzgar kesilir gibi olunca tırmanışa başladık ve öğlen saat 13.30 sularında Ağrı’nın 5165 metrelik doruğuna ulaştık. Klasik rotada platoya ulaşan buz traversi ilginç şekilde sadece karlıydı ve çok rahattı, emniyet almak gerekmedi. Zirvede hava ve görüş harikaydı ancak şiddetli bir güney rüzgarı vardı. 3 şubat günü toplanıp Çevirme köyüne ve Doğubayazıta indik. Böylece  Ağrı Dağı’na bir kış tırmanışı daha sona erdi. Şansımıza zirve günü süper olan hava diğer günlerde oldukça sert ve bozuktu.

A WINTER ASCENT OF  MT. ARARAT!

The last day of  january  2010 found me in Eastern Turkey- this time with a 22- strong team from Middle East Tech University, to climb the ordinary south face route on Mount Ararat in winter. The 5165 m. high snow and ice dome takes a form of deep freezer in winter, mostly with blue ice in the upper slopes. Wind is usually very strong and sometimes effectively bans climbing for sure, and  you can get real cold here, sometimes -40 C at 5000 m. altitude.

Beginning from the deserted, drab  village of Cevirme at 1800 m and reaching the c1 at 3200 m the first day, and c2 at 4200 m the second day was our  normal schedule. Deep snow, bad visibility and a strong whiteout were the usual winter  problems to deal with but the team was quite powerful to punch thru these! We left a deep trench in knee deep snow as we ploughed up on the slopes. Finally, C2 at 4200 m with the usual stone walls and a nighttime temperature of -25 C! 

Third day was the summit push from c2. Fortunately for us, good but slightly windy conditions prevailed and it took us almost 5 hours to reach the icy cupola of  Turkey’s highest peak. Temperature was not too bad for winter, -10 C or so, and some wind from south insisted. Surprisingly, the normally icy sections that would require some belaying and fixing a rope in winter  were easy snow  slopes only, and it was quite straightforward to go up and down walking. The day lent us great views of eastern Turkey and Armenia to the north, as well as the conic Small Ararat. Descent was without particular problems and the next day was our  return journey.   The weather got worse and stormy again on our way back to civilization..

Fourth day, we were enjoying ourselves, eating and messing around  at the border town of Dogubeyazid. The real adventure started then: Eastern Turkey would not let it’s grip on us- bad weather and big snowfall hindering all transport. İt was a few days until we all got back home.
