MANASLU (8163 m) TIRMANIŞI- NEPAL / HİMALAYA

Dünyanın en yüksek 8. zirvesi olan, Nepal- Himalayalardaki Manaslu Dağı tırmanışını 25 eylül 2013 tarihinde, oksijen kullanmadan gerçekleştirdim. Benim onuncu  8000 metrelik zirvem olan Manaslu’nun İlk Türk Tırmanışı’nı yaptım ve bu senenin ikinci 8000 metrelik zirvesi oldu benim için.

Manaslu Dağı, mesela  Everest Dağı’na kıyasla teknik olarak görece zor ve daha alçak bir dağ;  ‘görece kolay’ 8000’lik zirvelerden sayılabilir.  Ancak Manaslu, belli koşullarda büyük çığ  riski taşıyan bir dağdır; 2012 sonbahar sezonunda 2. kamptaki çığda 11 kişi hayatını kaybetmişti. Özellikle 1. ve 2. kamplar arasında, 6000 metrelerdeki icefall etabında bir yer var ki,  bu sefer de ciddi çığ tehlikesi tasiyordu. Manaslu enteresan hava şartlarına sahip bir dağ, çok nemli ve hep yağışlı, karlı bir havası var. Fakat bu sene nasılsa, kuru ve yağışsız bir hava hakimdi.

Bu tırmanışı dostum Zhang Wei liderliğindeki 4  Çin Halk Cumhuriyeti dağcısı   ve 5  Nepalli Sherpa’dan oluşan ekip ile koordine şekilde  yaptim. Ana kamp yöneticimiz  ise, 14×8000 projesini geçen sene bitiren, K2 Dağı’na 2012 yılında beraber tırmandığımız Chhang Dawa Sherpa idi. Kısacası çok iyi ve tatlı bir ekibimiz vardı.

Manaslu tırmanışı için, 9  eylül günü helikopterle 3600 metredeki Samagaon köyüne uçtuk, bu da bizi bir haftalık yağmurlu ve sıcak bir trekten kurtardı (ancak bunu yapabilmek için önceden yükseğe uyumlu olmak şart!) 4900 metredeki ana kamp, Manaslu doğu buzulu kıyısında,  genelde nemli ve yağmurlu olan bir  kayalık sırta kuruluyor..  Ana kampa varışımdan itibaren toplam 13 günde,  dağda  tırmanışta 6 gün geçirerek  zirveye çıktım.

Tırmanışta dağ üzerinde  tek yükseğe uyum tırmanışım 2 gün sürdü: ilk gün  5700 metredeki 1. kamp ve ikinci gün  6400 metredeki 2. kampta birer gece geçirdim, bu etaplarda tüm yükümü taşıyıp hep tek başıma hareket etmem gerekti.  Bir hafta sonraki zirve tırmanışında ise,  1. kamp (5700 m), 2. kampı atlayarak 3. kampı (6800 m) ve  4. kampı (7400 m) kullandık ve hep ekip olarak hareket ettik.

Zirve tırmanışı 25 eylül gecesi saat 03.15’de başladı ve   sabah 09.25’de Manaslu Dağı’nın doruğuna çıkmamla son buldu.  Gece ısısı genel olarak -25 C idi ancak rüzgar yoktu. Gece ay ışığı ve yıldızlar altında tırmandık:  tırmanış boyunca göruş şartları mükemmeldi. Zirve tırmanışı büyük ekiplerin çok  sayıda sherpa’sı ve batılı üyeleri nedeniyle oldukça kalabalıktı ve bu ekiplerin istisnasiz tamamı bol oksijen desteği  ile tırmanıyordu. Ancak böylesi büyük, karlı bir dağ için, ne kadar çok kişi olursanız o kadar iyi.

Böylece,  Manaslu’nun keskin bir kaya ve buz sırtı olup, sadece tek kişinin ayakta durabileceği kadar küçük bir kar- kaya kubbesinden oluşan  esas doruğuna çıktık.  Manzara, 360 derece kesintisiz Himalaya idi: doğuda Everest ve Lhotse, Shishapangma, Ganesh ve Langtang grupları, kuzeyde Tibet’in boz plato ve yatık zirveleri, batıda Annapurna ve Dhaulagiri silsileleri.. Yüzlerce kilometrelik inanılmaz bir görüntü!

Zirvede, mükemmel hava ve görüş koşullarında geçirdiğim, neredeyse inmek istemediğim  bir saatten sonra, aynı gün 3200 m irtifa kaybederek ve tüm kamplardaki yüklerimi toplayarak, sis ve ince bir çisenti  altında  ana kampa ulastım. Kısacası, zirve ve iniş toplam 15 saatlik  yorucu bir maratona dönüştü!

Böylece, Sanskritçe ismi ile  ‘Ruhların Daği’ Manaslu Doruğu benim oldu!

SUMMIT AT MANASLU (8163 m)

Dear friends, followers and supporters!

I have successfully summitted Mt. Manaslu at Nepal Himalaya, the 8th highest peak of the planet, 25th september 2013, at 09.25 hrs.  Having done the climb without using supplementary oxygen, it was the First Turkish Ascent of the mountain, as well as my overall  10th 8000 m peak, and the 2nd 8000 m peak of 2013 for me.

Manaslu, as compared to Mt. Everest, is a lower but  dangerous as well as  little bit more technical peak– it can be  well told that it is one of the ‘easier’ 8000 m peaks. Anyhow, the peak encompasses  great avalanche danger under certain conditions, and  exactly so at some passages around 6000 m on its east facing notorious icefall. And the weather in Manaslu is weird, very humid and always rainy. But this year it was more dry and conditions were somehow very stable.

I have shared this expedition with a generous five person Chinese team led by my friend Zhang Wei and supported by 5 Nepali Sherpa, whom all I knew from previous expeditions. Our  formidable base camp manager was Chhang Dawa Sherpa, who  finished 14×8000 project, and with whom we have summitted K2 in 2012. Altogether, a kind and nice team!

For climbing Manaslu, we flew to the village of Samagaon by helicopter, which actually saved us a week long hot and rainy trek (but we made sure we were acclimatized beforehand for this!) The base camp was a cosy, sloping ridge at 4900 metres by the Manaslu east glacier, always seemingly moist and rainy and in clouds.  I spent  6  climbing days  above the base camp  to summit, of which 2 were actually acclimatisation days.

In my only acclimatisation trip which lasted 2 days, i always had to  move on my own and carried all required gear by myself. First day i went up the glacier to C1 (5700 m) and second day i climbed up to lower C2 (6400 m) and slept there. That was it. The next  climb was for summit and first day we went to C1 (5700 m) by an afternoon stroll really. Second day, climbing up the dangerous icefall with avalanche risk, we bypassed C2 and spent the night at C3 (6800 m) at the Manaslu-Peak Naike col. Next day, climbing the  slope to the shoulder of Manaslu protected by an easy angled icefall, we reached final camp, C4  (7400 m) where we rested briefly before starting for the summit at 03.15 hrs after midnight.

Late night was cold, as low as -25C but with no wind and beautiful moon and stars. The summit day in Manaslu is composed of negotiating wide flat glacier plateaus, divided by steeper, smaller slopes. It was quite crowded with the sherpas and members of the big teams, who, without exception used oxygen support, but nevertheless, for  trenching thru deep snow on such a big snowy mountain, big teams are very fine!

The ‘real summit’ of Manaslu is a sharp fin of snow and rock, with the summit an exposed, minimal  cupola of rock and ice on which only one person can stand airily! It was 09.25 in the morning and  on the  8163 m. summit, which was deserted by now,  i watched the wild Himalayan  panorama extending hundreds of miles everywhere, including Everest, Lhotse and Shishapangma, Langtang and Ganesh groups to the east,  brown Tibetan  hills to the north, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges to the west. Awesome….

After an hypoxic and magic  hour at this summit of the ‘mountain of souls’, it was time to leave the place to its original loneliness.. The same day, i  had descended 3200 m, collecting all my gear along the way, and after a total of 125 hour marathon, i reached the base camp by sundown, in mist and drizzle.
